Oracle make Google over Android software

Oracle Corp. dropped a major legal bombshell on Google Inc. late Thursday, kicking off what could be an epic clash of Silicon Valley titans.
"This is a case of Goliath versus Goliath," IDC analyst Al Hilwa said.
Oracle, the software giant, filed a patent and copyright infringement lawsuit against Google, the Internet behemoth, over the Android software that uses technology Oracle bought when it acquired Sun Microsystems Inc. in January. Google's Android software is used in mobile phones produced by Motorola Inc., Taiwan's HTC Corp. and others.
"In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle's Java-related intellectual property," Redwood City, Calif.-based Oracle said in a statement. "This lawsuit seeks appropriate remedies for their infringement."
For its part, a spokesman for Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said the company was "disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Google and the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit."
The open-source Java community "goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the Web a better place," Google said.
Oracle's surprise bid to control use of the software has sparked an uproar in Silicon Valley. The lawsuit seeks unspecific damages and an injunction, which could throw a major monkey wrench into developing applications using Android software.
Sun's Java lets developers write software that works on a variety of computers and systems and runs on countless mobile devices. Sun held thousands of patents but backed open-source sharing. It cut licensing deals for Java, but also offered free versions. It was often criticized for not making enough money from Java.
Oracle's maverick Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison called Java "the single most important software asset we have ever acquired."
And Android mobile phones are emerging as a very valuable business line for Google. To date, there are 60 Android devices built by 21 handset makers. Android will be in almost one-fifth of all smart phones by 2012, research firm ISuppli Corp. projects. That has set off furious competition and a flurry of patent-infringement complaints, including claims from Microsoft Corp., which has said that Android may infringe on its patents.
Of all the executives in Silicon Valley, Google CEO Eric Schmidt is more aware than most of the value of Java. He worked at Sun and led its Java development efforts before joining Google in 2001.
Java is essential to Android, analysts said. "This will have an effect on Android," Hilwa said.
Android software is used by handset makers and carriers as well as legions of software developers. "All of these people are going to be concerned whether they are in compliance or if they are infringing on patents," Hilwa said. "There is all of the sudden a cloud of uncertainty over Android that could impact the adoption of Android down the road depending on how these things play out."

outside lands

The Outside Lands music festival, which drew more than 100,000 people last year, will hit Golden Gate Park Saturday. The event at the park's polo field has been shortened to a two-day event, but it is still expected to draw a big crowd and create traffic headaches.
"I grabbed my place already and I'm sitting there, not moving, until Monday," Richmond District resident Lee Wanda Marshall said.
Thursday, Marshall parked her car in front of her Richmond District home and that is where it will stay.
Outside Lands starts Saturday at the nearby polo grounds. Some of the festivals expected 50,000 attendees will be trying to find parking in her neighborhood so she had to stake her claim.
Henry Arnold has lived near the polo grounds for 33 years. Like most local resident ACB7 spoke to, parking is an issue, but the music and traffic is not much of a bother.
"It doesn't bother me but it's a little inconvenient when you can't get through the park," Arnold said.
The event attracted more than 100,000 people for the past two years. Groups like Kings of Leon and Furthur are expected to draw the same huge crowds this weekend even though the event has now been reduced to two days instead of three like last year.
"It was really just the availability of top level talent that we thought would make the event what it's been, so we wanted to maintain that level," Rick Farman of Superfly Productions said.
Tickets are $75. No food or drink is allowed into the polo grounds but there will be food for sale from 40 local restaurants and wines from 25 wineries. Promoters say the event contributes $1 million to the city's cash strapped recreation and parks budget and creates a financial magnet for the city.
Outside Lands event producers say it attracts people from all over the country and those people will spend about $30 million in San Francisco over the two days.
Promoter Allen Scott says the city does not have to contribute a dime for the event.
"We pay for all city services, cleanup, additional Muni, that sort of thing," Scott said.
Promoters say taking public transportation is the best way to attend.

Apple Can Fix iPhone’s PDF Security

security development in the Apple stated today that it has already developed a fix for the iPhone and iPad security exploit that could let hackers do critical damage to your iOS device if you simply open a malicious PDF file. The fix will be implemented in the next software update, but that hasn’t happened yet.

CNET quoted an Apple spokesperson saying, “We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.” No time frame was given for the update, but it’s sure to be soon because the exploit is quite severe. As we reported yesterday, you could visit a web page with a PDF that contains a program that causes a stack overflow, giving a hacker deep access to your iPhone or iPad. The exploit is possible on any iOS device running OS 3.1.2 or later.
The security hole is actually the same as that used for the JailbreakMe jailbreak for the iPhone 4 and iOS 4, so it stands to reason that Apple’s fix will stop that from functioning also. That’s how it always goes, though; someone figures out a way in, the manufacturer patches it, then that someone figures out another way in and the manufacturer patches that one too.
Anyway, you might want to avoid the next software update if you want to be able to use the current, web-based jailbreaking tool, but you’d also be well-advised to patch up the hole to end the risk that someone will hack your device. It’s your call. Which are you going to do? Let us know in the comments.
