Android-powered Samsung Gem available tomorrow from US Cellular for $29.99

The Samsung Gem is an Android-powered device that we've first heard of all the way back in August of last year. However, Samsung only officially introduced it this January, and thus far it's only been available from Alltel in the US.

That has changed today, though. US Cellular has announced that it will start selling the Gem on April 1 – that's tomorrow. And hopefully this isn't a joke. US Cellular asks precisely $29.99 from you for this phone, after a $80 mail-in rebate. You can get the Gem on US Cellular's Belief Project, which doesn't require you to sign any additional contract after you've fulfilled an initial two-year agreement.

The Samsung Gem, while cheap, is hampered by the fact that it's running Android 2.1 and is therefore two versions of the OS behind what's current. If you can get past that though, this is a pretty capable device for the price. It has a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, an 800 MHz processor, a 3.2-megapixel camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and microSD card support.
