Dirt 3 hidden games and party mode revealed

Codemaster's rally racing game Dirt 3 may be just around the corner, with a release date of May 24, but that doesn't stop them from continuing on teasing us. The developers Codemasters has revealed an intriguing three-game party mode in the newracing game. The party mode consists of mini games and will serve as an escape for those who get tired of sliding Ken Block's WRC Ford Fiesta around gravel-strewn corners at breakneck speed. It also means there will be a welcome multiplayer mode to an already awesome racing title.

The first, called Invasion, has players driving around an open parking lot attempting to destroy cardboard robots while avoiding skyscrapers, which could turn out to also be robots. The second game is Outbreak, where a glowing-green “infected” player tries to spread his car's disease by crashing into opponents. Last man standing without the verdant infection leaves the game victorious. The last game is Transporter, where players careen around in search of spontaneously-appearing flags. Once you claim a flag, you have to return it to your home base without being mugged by anotherplayer.

Essentially, party mode combines a Mario Party-style multiplayer mode with a straightforward rally-racing game. Sounds like Dirt 3 will be very awesome!

100 Atari Classic Games on iOS

Atari Greatest Hits is a package that contains 18 arcade games and 92 Atari 2600 games. First, if you simply download the app, you get Pong for free (this may be a temporary promo). As for the others, you can opt to buy each game for $0.99, or the whole pack of 100 games for $14.99. Obviously, many of these titles (Centipede, Millipede, Missile Command, ) were designed to be played with a joystick and a button (or a trackball!), that's why we like the iCade arcade cabinet so much. Gaming in the air gets more hardcore

For those who are frequent travelers and yet do not have the luxury of flying Business Class all the time, chances are you keep your sanity in check during a long haul flight by walking up and down the aisle frequently, not to mention go through the collection of movies that are there for your perusal – since sleeping is not an option as you're sandwiched in between two really large passengers that make it impossible to get some rest. If reading and watching movies are not your thing, then heaven have mercy on you. Surely you can't wait for Contour Aerospace and Factorydesign to make real their Not For Wimps prototype that was specially designed for in-flight gaming, boasting integrated speakers into the top edges of the seat to exude a bubble of active noise cancellation around the gamer, while a large monitor lies suspended in front of each seat by a Kevlar-coated carbon fiber arm. We foresee one problem with this – either the game had better come with some sort of cloud database for you to save your progress, or you can transfer your saved game to another physical media platform for you to continue later on when you land.

Game Boy Color revived from the dead by the power of the sun

A modder breathed new life into his dog-chewed Game Boy Color by blessing it with eternal life - as long as the sun shines of course. He ripped apart a solar powered garden lamp, took the solar panel from it and attached it to his Game Boy Color, hooked it up to the battery port in the device and managed to get it to recharge the self-provided rechargeable batteries on the device. It takes about a day to juice up the rechargeable batteries in the device by just leaving the Game Boy Color in the sun. While it's great that he'll never have to waste any more money on electricity bills or buying batteries to charge the console, leaving the Game Boy Color out in the sun doesn't sound too good for the health of its components. Anyway, read more about it here.

Razer Chimaera wireless Xbox 360 headset review

When a product takes well over a full year to go from introduction to release, it's natural for consumer expectations to amp themselves up a notch or two. Such is the case with Razer's Chimaera, an Xbox 360-centric wireless gaming headset that was initially teased at CES 2010, and just started shipping to end users early this year. The company's been in the gaming headset business for some time now -- if you'll recall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with the (wired) Carcharias headset right around two years back. This 2.1 system promises to give Xbox Live yappers exactly what they've been waiting for, but is it really worth the $129.99 entry fee? Head on past the break for our take.

For all intents and purposes, the Chimaera is a pretty simple product. There's a wireless base station with a 3.5mm audio input jack, a 3.5mm microphone output port, a sync button (not unlike the Wiimote situation you deal with on a daily basis) and a standby button. Upon unboxing 'em, you'll probably spend the first ten minutes trying to figure out where a pair of rechargeable AAA batteries (included, phew!) are to be inserted. Here's a tip: rip the panel from the earcup that lacks a microphone. You'll thank us.

The sync process is a lot easier, and while the charging stand is hardly childproof (a simple bump will have your headset tumbling), it serves the purpose without being too unsightly. The headset itself, unfortunately, is both heavy and intimidating. And by that, we mean large. Having ample padding around the top edge and on the ear cups is certainly appreciated, but unless you have a rather sizable noggin, you'll most likely wonder how on Earth to adjust the band down. We've never had any issues with the sizing on any prior headset, but the Chimaera essentially swallowed our head, and with no way to extend the band tighter (there's only ten notches of extension -- you know, for Goliath's intense gaming sessions), we were left in an uncomfortable pinch.

In all seriousness, we'd recommend stopping by a retail shop and trying these on before buying -- it's hard to imagine them not being too large for a huge swath of people. In an attempt to make the most of it, we kept 'em loosely draped around our skull for a bit of gaming, and while the wireless performance was stellar, we found the 3.5mm headphone input to be (also) a bit on the large side. We tried three different cables, and all of them just felt a wee bit loose. No connection troubles were noticed, but it still managed to get under our skin. Audio quality was above-average for wireless gaming headsets, but these certainly won't be your go-to cans when it comes time to sink back into a sofa and enjoy an album. The lows were definitely accentuated, likely to enhance explosions often felt in first-person shooters, and we're guessing that everything's equalized to best suit movies and games, not music.

The fold-down boom mic was perfectly positioned, and our chats soared through loud and clear; we couldn't help but long for a USB connection option in order to use this as a Skype headset in a pinch, but alas, no such luck. All told, the Chimaera feels like a solid product that wasn't exactly executed to perfection -- the large, bulky design turned us off right away, and the shoddy 3.5mm input didn't do much to rebuild that lost confidence. At $129.99, you've simply too many other options from the likes of Turtle Beach and SteelSeries (just to name a couple), and unless your cranium is larger than most, you'll probably have no choice but to pass this one by.

Hed Saver Cooling Patches Will Alleviate Headaches From 3DS Gaming

At first glance, the Hed Saver looked like an April Fools' Day prank, but upon further clicking, it appears that it's not a gag after all. The Hed Saver is a real bonafide cooling patch marketed at Nintendo 3DS gamers who are suffering from headaches and dizziness with the 3D effect turned up. For about $32, you'll get two cooling patches that “work right out of the box” with no setup required. Why isn't that clever! GamingZap is pulling out all the punches to sell 3DS accessories and with a little bit of luck, they might actually lure in some unsuspecting gamers. To be honest, this is just a regular cooling patch you can find in a drug store or at a local pharmacy. Coughing up the $32 for this would be stupid on any person's part. Bsides, Nintendo's official recommendation is to take frequent breaks every 30 minutes or so with 3D on or just turn off 3D effect. It's your money, but we're just saying, that $32 could probably go towards a new 3DS game. And isn't that money better spent than on cooling pads?

Unreal Engine 3 Coming to Sony Xperia Play and NGP?

Epic's Mark Rein loves the PlayStation 3. He loves the Xbox 360. He loves the PC. You know what else he loves? His company's Unreal Engine 3 on the iPhone and iPad. He doesn't care much about Ubisoft porting the older Unreal Engine 2 to the 3DS. That much we know. However, concerning Sony's upcoming Android-powered Xperia Play smartphone and PlayStation Portable successor – the NGP – he says Epic's supporting both devices. Having not provided any specific details as to what supporting the Xperia Play and NGP actually means, we're going to deduce it means Unreal Engine 3, seeing as he got worked up when Ubisoft was boasting about its Unreal Engine 2 triumphs on the3DS. Logically speaking, both the Xperia Play and NGP are more than capable of handling the engine. The Xperia Play is just about on par with the iPhone 4 with 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, whereas the NGP is theoretically capable of upwards of 2GHz on its quad-core processor. What interests us the most is not how well these games will play on their respective screens, but how they will look when hooked up to a HDTV via an HDMI cable. Games developed with Unreal Engine 3 should look every bit as gorgeous as some of the best PS3 and Xbox 360 games, with gratuitous lighting and shader effects.

How would you change OnLive's MicroConsole game system?

The concept of a streaming console has been around for ages, and while Phantom Entertainment never could quite pull it off, the folks at OnLive seem to be onto something. 'Course, only time will tell if that "something" is a legitimate enough business to make sustainable, but at least it has moved well beyond the point of vaporware. Now that the MicroConsole has been raiding living rooms for a few months, we're curious to know your thoughts on things. Have you been able to try one out? Are you still reverting back to your conventional consoles? Are you pleased with OnLive's performance given your ho hum cable connection? Would you have inked deals with a few more game publishers before pushing it out? Go on and get really real down in comments below - given the small size of the company, there's a better-than-average chance it'll be listening to what you have to say.
