ASUS refreshes Lamborghini VX7 with Sandy Bridge, mercifully offers a black option

Just in time for spring, ASUS has refreshed its Lamborghini VX7, a staple in the company's line of premium notebooks (and fugly smartphones) inspired by the storied Italian car maker. Available in orange and a more staid black, this 8.4-pound beast packs a quad-core Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7 processor, Full HD 15.6-inch display, discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics with 3GB of video memory, up to 16GB of RAM, an 8-cell battery, one USB 3.0 port (along with three USB 2.0 ones), HDMI output, a 2 megapixel webcam, and hard drive space ranging from 500GB to 750GB with speeds of either 5,400RPM or 7,200RPM. Or, you can opt for an SSD as large as 1.25TB. (ASUS likens the speeds to a 10,000 RPM drive.) Asus's latest Lamborghini laptop has break lights; can almost choke you with smokes

Not an unusual encounter, Asus and Lamborghini have yet again teamed up for yet another new round of bloody expensive laptops with very odd shapes and some raw powers ready to tear Crysis 2. Acer Liquid mt review

Acer may not be a huge player in the North American smartphone market, but it has slowly been improving its game, and it's had some measure of success with its Liquid E -- which, for a little while at least, was one of the better budget-priced Android options around. That phone has now gotten a proper successor in the form of the Liquid mt (otherwise known as the Liquid Metal), which first rolled out in Europe last fall and recently made its North American debut on Rogers in Canada. We managed to get a brief look at the phone at Mobile World Congress last month, but we've now had some additional time to properly test the phone and see how it stacks up. Will it finally earn Acer a bit of respect? Read on for our full review.

Hardware

The Liquid mt certainly isn't the thinnest or sleekest Android phone around, but it is unquestionably a big step up for Acer, and may just even be capable of turning a few heads. As the name suggests, the phone is largely enclosed in metal, including some shiny chrome around the edges and a stainless steel back that's been given the appearance of carbon fiber. It slides up to reveal the battery, SIM card and microSD card slot -- the latter of which is blocked by the battery, which can be a slight inconvenience but seems to be an increasingly common occurrence.


On the front of the phone you'll find four capacitive touch buttons that keep things as minimal as possible, along with a 3.6-inch display that boasts a standard 800 x 480 resolution. The glass on top of the display is also slightly curved, which unfortunately allows for a bit more glare than the screen would presumably have otherwise. Visibility proved to be even worse outdoors, where we sometimes struggled to see anything on the phone in particularly harsh lighting conditions.

The screen itself is otherwise decent, although we noticed that the color temperature leaned considerably towards the cool side of the spectrum. It's not to the point of being distracting when you're actually using the phone, but it is certainly noticeable when compared to other devices. Both the front and back of the phone are also unsurprisingly something of a fingerprint magnet and, as you can see, the phone is also somewhat bigger than it had to be given the screen size, although it's certainly still more pocketable than most jumbo phones. On the whole, however, the phone is solidly built and looks good even next to some higher-end phones, which is no small feat.

Performance-wise, the phone is... decent. It packs the same 800MHz Qualcomm msm7230 processor found in the likes of the T-Mobile G2 and managed to score around the 1100 mark in our Quadrant tests (that's in unmodified HTC Evo 4G territory), but the phone just felt a bit more sluggish than we would have liked in general use. In fact, navigating around Android proved to be noticeably less snappy than something like the LG Optimus One (and its various iterations), which only has a 600MHz processor. That sluggishness was prevalent when using both Acer's "Breeze" Android skin or stock Froyo (more on that later), though stock did fare ever so slightly better.


Battery life is also solid but unremarkable. It'll easily handle a day of average use, but you'll likely run into trouble if you leave the next day without remembering to charge it. One other nice little touch is a hidden status display at the top of the phone, which shows the phone's charging status when plugged in, and flashing icon when you have new email -- something that we wouldn't mind seeing on more phones.

As for call quality, it's decent as well, although we found the volume to be a tad low for our tastes -- folks we talked to didn't seem to have any trouble hearing us, though. The Liquid mt is also actually Rogers' first phone to support 14.4Mbps HSDPA, although we unfortunately weren't in an area where we could test those speeds.

Camera

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot to say about the Liquid mt's 5 megapixel camera (with an LED flash). You'll get some decent enough stills and video outdoors under ideal conditions, but just about any other situation will likely leave you wishing your brought a point-and-shoot along as well. Even in the best conditions, however, we found our shots to be excessively sharpened (see a 100% crop here), and the colors were generally just a bit off in most every situation, and occasionally a lot off. Software

As is its nature, Acer has chosen to customize Android with its own skin, dubbed "Breeze." It actually includes a few features we like -- most notably multiple lock screens with widgets that you can customize, another idea we'd like to see on more Android phones. It also replaces the usual slide to unlock screen with a nifty page turn animation, but, for the most part, Acer's customizations hurt more than they help. The status bar actually moves around the screen depending on what you're doing, for instance, and the apps menu confusingly splits up the screen and is less than intuitive to navigate. There's also unfortunately quite a bit of bloatware pre-loaded on the phone, both from Acer and Rogers, but nothing that can't be moved out of your way.


The good news is that Acer has made it easy for you to simply switch to stock Android 2.2 -- the option shown above is right under applications in the settings menu. That, of course, offers few surprises, but it's certainly a better experience overall. As we mentioned earlier, we also found that the phone performed slightly better with stock Android than with Acer's skin, and it also returns the capacitive buttons to the behavior you'd expect -- when using the Acer UI, the menu button actually brings up the applications screen.

One problematic thing we noticed in both instances, however, is that Acer has for some reason chosen not to include a silent ringtone for notifications. You can add your own, of course, or turn off notifications altogether -- but out of the box, we had no way to silence email notifications while still receiving other notifications, which is a pretty basic thing for Acer to overlook.

Wrap-up

We didn't have huge expectations for the Acer Liquid mt, so we can't really say we were disappointed by it. The phone performs about as well as you'd expect for a mid-range Android device, and it even manages to punch a bit above its weight when it comes to design and construction. Unfortunately for Acer, there's simply a lot of much better options available for the same price or just a little bit more -- at least when when it comes to the Canadian market.

In the case of Rogers, for instance, the Liquid mt is priced the same as the Samsung Captivate on a three-year contract and, at $400, is only $150 less off-contract. Elsewhere on the Canadian landscape, the Motorola Atrix is just $20 more on-contract on Bell, while Telus is currently offering the HTC Desire HD for free on-contract. Acer may well have a winner on its hands if the phone were, say, $200 off-contract like the aforementioned LG Optimus One is on some carriers but, as it is, it's a pretty tough sell.

MSI add AMD's Fusion technology into its extra slim X370

This Friday, MSI announced that is has introduced a new 13" X370 ultra-slim notebook the X370. Far from being as powerful that on its Core i5 Version this new X370 will however provide you with an increase battery life and acceptable performances for your everyday computing needs.

Alienware M14X details leaked

The Alienware M14x that was rumored about earlier this week might turn out to be the real deal after all. Chinese tech site, Zol.com.cn, posted a full review of the laptop alleged to be the M14x online, and provided some clear snapshots to go along with the details of the computer. According to the report, the Alienware M14x features an Intel Core i7-2820QM Sandy Bridge processor, 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M graphics, 750GB drive and a Cougar Point HM67 chipset. No mentions of the tablet's weight or dimensions were mentioned, but it does look like the real deal. Toshiba Launches Satellite R800 Laptops

The new Satellite laptops feature “Intel's latest full-performance CPUs”, a slim design, new cooling technology, USB 3.0, HDMI, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and a built-in optical drive. The R830 has a magnesium alloy casing, while the R840 and R850 sport new High Stiffness Resin cases.

The company has also revealed that the R830 and R840 have up to 8GB RAM, up to 640GB hard drive space, a built-in webcam, 1,366 x 768 LED-backlight displays, and a battery life of up to 8.5 and 8 hours, respectively.

Toshiba's Satellite R800 notebooks are estimated to be available during the second quarter 2011 throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa. There's no info on pricing and availability in other parts of the world. Toshiba, however, says that the laptops will be affordable.

HP EliteBook, ProBook Business Laptops for 2011 Announced

The 14-inch EliteBook 8460p and 15.6-inch EliteBook 8560p belong to higher-end professional laptop offerings and have business-rugged HP DuraCase chassis that meets MIL-STD 810G military-standard. The laptops include a platinum color tone finish, the Intel Core i7, i5 and i3 processors, integrated graphics or AMD Radeon HD 6470M dedicated video card, USB 3.0 technology, and various storage, wireless connectivity, and battery options, including the HP Ultra-Capacity Notebook battery that provides the EliteBook 8460p with up to 32 hours of battery life.

The mainstream HP ProBook b-series 13.3″ 6360b, 14″ 6460b and 15.6″ 6560b have a magnesium-reinforced ABS chassis with a new smudge-resistant and wear-resistant tungsten-colored design. There are also Intel Celeron processor choice in addition to the Core i3, i5 and i7, Intel's integrated graphics, and optional AMD Radeon HD 6470M in the 6460b and 6560b.

HP's ProBook s-series laptops are designed for budget-minded small and midsize businesses, and include the HP ProBook 4230s (12.1″), 4330s (13.3″), 4430s (14″), 4530s (15.6″), and 4730s (17.3″). The notebooks are available in a brushed-aluminum finish in metallic gray color. S-series systems have the same CPU options as the b-series, and integrated graphics in all models except the 17.3-incher that will sport a dedicated GPU.

The HP EliteBook 8460p and 8560p start at $999 and $1,099, respectively, while the HP ProBook b-series starts at $799. The HP ProBook s-series starts at $579. All laptops are expected to be available in the United States on March 15.

MacBook Pro MC721LL/A 15″ Overview

Besides an Intel Core i7 quad-core 2.0GHz CPU, the MC721LL/A includes hybrid graphics technology combining the Intel HD 3000 integrated and AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256MB GDDR5 dedicated GPU. The notebook has 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, SuperDrive DVD burner, 77.5-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery for “up to 7 hours” of wireless web surfing on a single charge, and the new Thuderbolt connector, enabling users to connect compatible peripherals to the MacBook Pro at speeds of up to 10Gbps, "more than 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0″.

Its 1440 x 900-pixel LED-backlight display has glossy coating.

Apple's MacBook Pro MC721LL/A has the new FaceTime HD camera, a backlight keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, stereo speakers with subwoofers, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Gigabit LAN connections, two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 Mbps port, and SDXC card slot. Video output is provided via the Thunderbolt port, which is natively compatible with mini DisplayPort. Additionally, video can be transmitted via separately sold DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI, and HDMI adapters that connect to the Thunderbolt.

The laptop runs Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard and is priced at $1,799.00 (Apple Store), $1,794.00 (Amazon), and $1,769.00 (MacMall).

A more powerful version – the MC723LL/A – starts at around $2,199.00.

Lenovo ThinkPad W520 Overview

The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 is made for designers and engineers and packs higher-end Intel 2nd Generation Core laptop CPUs, including the dual-core i5-2540M and i7-2620M, and quad-core i7-2720QM, i7-2820QM, and Extreme Edition i7-2920XM. Dual-core W520 models have two SO-DIMM slots, while quad-core models have four, supporting up to 8GB and 16GB of DDR3 RAM, respectively.

Besides Intel HD integrated graphics, the ISV-certified mobile workstation comes with the NVIDIA Quadro 1000M or 2000M dedicated video card, both with 2GB of video memory. The integrated and discrete GPUs are combined using Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics technology, in order to deliver longer battery life.

Data storage options include a solid state drive or a traditional hard disk, and the Ultrabay that accommodates an optical drive, secondary HDD, or other Ultrabay-compatible parts.

Regarding computing performance, Lenovo says that the W520 and other new Thinkpads can stay in Intel Turbo Boost dynamically overclocked CPU mode longer than other laptops with the same technology. This improvement Lenovo calls Turbo Boost+.

Display choices are the same as in the ThinkPad T520. Available are LED-backlight anti-glare 16:9 screens with 1366x768, 1600x900, or full HD 1920x1080 resolution. The lower-res displays have 60% color gamut and 220-nit brightness, while the 270-nit full HD choice has 95% gamut.

Regarding connectivity, the ThinkPad T520 incorporates 802.11n Wi-Fi, optional Bluetooth 3.0, optional mobile broadband, Gigabit LAN, and a 56k modem.

Other features are an optional X-Rite color calibration sensor in the palm rest, a spill-resistant keyboard, 720p high-def webcam, microphone that supports conferencing, stereo speakers, DisplayPort and VGA video connectors, two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, and one eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port, 4-in-1 media card reader, FireWire 400 port, and an ExpressCard slot.

Security is enhanced using an optional fingerprint reader, the Trusted Platform Module 1.2 chip, optional Smart Card slot, and optionally encrypted hard drives. Also are available security features that come with optional Intel vPro system management technology.

The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 ships with a 6-cell or 9-cell battery, providing up to 6.5 and 10.8 hours of battery life, respectively. Notebook's run time can be extended to 21.6 hours, using the 9-cell unit and an optional 9-cell slice battery that mounts on the bottom of the case.

The laptop is around 1.3 inches thick and starts at around 5.5 pounds.

The chassis looks as same as in the T520 and passes “8 MilSpec tests” for ruggedness. The display lid is made of carbon-fiber / glass-fiber hybrid, while the bottom is made of glass-fiber reinforced plastic.

Lenovo's mobile workstation runs Windows 7 Professional OS and is expected to be available in late March 2011 for a base price of 1,329.
