Samsung’s Galaxy Tab: iPad’s First Solid Contender

Galaxy Tab
iPhone:iPad :: Galaxy S:Galaxy Tab

That simple analogy is all you really need to know about the highly anticipated Galaxy Tab and what it can do.
With the first legitimate competitor to iPad for the consumer-focused tablet-computer market, Samsung continues to take its cues from Apple — just as it’s been doing with cellphones.
That is not necessarily a bad thing. For all its faults, the iPad is still the tablet to beat. The Galaxy Tab takes direct aim at iPad’s shortcomings and does a credible job at addressing nearly all of them.
The most immediately noteworthy difference from the iPad is that the Galaxy is considerably smaller — physically about half the size and weight, with a 7-inch diagonal screen instead of the iPad’s 9.7 inches. However, the Tab’s 1024 x 600–pixel resolution makes this less of a big deal than you might expect. Considering the iPad’s 1024 x 768–pixel resolution, you’ll find the Tab nearly as spacious, although the screen (a standard LCD) is not as bright and as clear as the iPad’s beauty.
What you gain, however, is considerably better portability: The iPad is not always convenient to tote with you, while the Tab really feels like a jumbo-sized cellphone and slips easily into any bag and many jacket pockets.
Any screen shortcomings are rapidly put out of mind by the Galaxy Tab’s rich feature set. Everything you’d want from a modern Android phone (version 2.2, upgradeable when 3.0 hits) is here: Full app support (though, as with running iPhone apps on the iPad, many apps look JUMBO SIZE in use), a fair-enough camera (3.2 megapixels) with flash, a mobile hotspot and tethering option, and virtually no buttons. The only physical buttons are the power button and volume toggle, both on the upper right side. Four touch-sensitive Android-standard buttons on the bottom of the front screen are usable only when the display is active.
Storage is what you make of it: A 16-GB microSD card, accessible via a flap on the side, is installed by default, and you can upgrade to 32 GB.
In use, the Galaxy Tab performs well, but is not exemplary. It feels snappy enough, but longish load times can sometimes be tiresome, and webpages invariably loaded more slowly than the iPad — sometimes taking twice as long. We also ran into a few issues with apps hanging and the Wi-Fi connection suddenly vanishing without explanation. Reboots solved both issues.
On the hardware side, the light, 13.4-ounces unit just fits in a single hand, but the slick surface tends to be slippery and prone to dropping. If you’re the kind of person who is always finding his phone falling out of your grip, your Tab is going to spend a lot of time on the floor. (Maybe that’s why Jobso was so critical of these devices?)
Compounding matters is the problematic location of the power and volume buttons. Holding the device in your left hand often causes you to hit these by accident. They’re temperamental and touchy, until you eventually adapt to a grip further down the chassis.
Pricing is complicated and modeled after the cellphone, so pay close attention: The base unit is $400 with a new or upgraded two-year contract, or $600 without a rate plan. Data costs extra: $30 a month for 2 GB of service plus unlimited messaging, or $60 a month for 5 GB and unlimited messaging. Mobile Hotspot support is extra ($30 a month), and Sprint Navigation is extra, too.
These are relatively minor complaints, in the end. The Tab requires some retraining in the way you use a mobile device — it’s somewhere between a phone and a regular tablet — but once you get it, it’s a pleasure to use. The Tab ultimately reveals itself not as a competitor to the iPad but as a new class of mobile devices: a minitablet that is designed to go everywhere you do.
WIRED Smaller form factor offers much better portability. Bright, high-resolution screen. Runs Flash? Oh, yeah.
TIRED Some stability concerns. Proprietary connector and cable (looks like an iPod port, but ain’t). Battery is nonreplaceable.

Samsung has just delivered a most welcome (and concrete) bit of news for British smartphone lovers. Its next do-it-all Android superphone will be available on May 1st in the United Kingdom. The Galaxy S II will emulate its predecessor by being made available “across all major networks and retailers.” The press release promises a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, which indicates we're looking at the Exynos 4210 variant of this handset. We'll try to track down availability information for the rest of Europe, but at least Brits can now stop fretting about the delay / non-delay of this marquee phone's launch.

Samsung Galaxy S receiving Gingerbread in a matter of weeks

Samsung's flagship Android phone, the Galaxy S, was promised to have Gingerbread (Android 2.3) by the end of March - but from the looks of how things have been it looks like the promise wasn't kept. However, UK mobile carrier, Three has stepped up to the plate and announced on their official Twitter page that the Android phone will be getting its upgrade - within a matter of weeks. While this hasn't been confirmed by Samsung themselves, the carrier must have some information if not they wouldn't be proclaiming such a thing right? So it looks like Gingerbread will arrive within the next few weeks - at least for the Galaxy S phones in the UK. Either way, there's nothing for us to do but sit and wait. I wonder when will our carriers start promising Android 2.3 for all the rebadged Galaxy S phones?

Samsung Nori F2 introduced

Samsung of South Korea has just rolled out a new cell phone in their country under the Nori banner, where it will be known as the Samsung Nori F2. If you happen to have a penchant for model names and numbers, then this puppy can be called the SHW-A280S/K/L. Boasting a 3″ touchscreen display and a clamshell form factor, it does seem to defy common convention. After all, why have a clamshell when you can't access the display when closed? At least when it is closed, an LED display will do its best to let you know the most basic of information such as incoming or missed calls, any unread text messages, emails and calendar events among others. Since this is Korea we're talking about, no surprise to see a T-DMB tuner thrown into the mix, alongside a 3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity and a microSD memory card slot. Would it arrive Stateside? We don't think so, but if you're heading to South Korea anytime soon, this might be worth a look.

Samsung Galaxy S II delayed to get speed bump

Very anticipating for the Samsung Galaxy S II to arrive? Well we have good news and bad news for all you Sammy fans. GSM Arena is reporting that Samsung has decided to upgrade the phone's dual-core processor from 1GHz to 1.2GHz, something that was first revealed on Samsung Estonia's Facebook page and has apparently be confirmed by GSM Arena itself from an “internal source.” The bad news is that it seems you'll also have to deal with a bit of a delay. Some UK retailers are now listing a release date of May 6th, while Samsung India has tweeted that the phone's global launch has been delayed by “at least” a month, and that it won't roll out before June. Then again, this only affects the version that comes with Orion processor, as the Tegra 2 version is reported to be on track for launch. Last minute desperate modification? For what? Dual-core is already very powderful right now.

Samsung Gem headed to Verizon

The Samsung Gem that was officially announced to arrive on US Cellular a few days ago will be headed to Verizon in the near future as well. Some photographs of the phone have been posted online, showing off the phone with Verizon badge on the device and on the startup screen itself. The phone is nothing to shout about, featuring entry-level specs, Android 2.2 and no 4G LTE, but that means it shouldn't cost too much with a 2-year Verizon contract either. Head here to check out more images of the device. Will you be picking up this phone when it lands on Big Red?

Nexus S 4G Launching this Week? Best Buy Seems to Be Confused

Although the Nexus S 4G is rumored to be out April 18th – that’s only a couple of short weeks from now – Best Buy’s latest activity is suggesting it could be here sooner than we think. Reports have flown in telling of Best Buy’s website showing varying statuses for the device.

At one point, you could add it to your shipping cart and have it shipped between May 1st and May 5th and asked users if they wanted to add the $10 premium data charge to their account. I witnessed this one myself. Hours later, the retailer reportedly showed the device as being available for shipping as early as tomorrow.

Now, it is just listed as coming soon. Either Best Buy’s just preparing for the launch of the pure Google Experience phone well in advance or they accidentally outed the Nexus S 4G’s true release window. We’ll see soon enough.

Samsung Galaxy Prevail to be Samsung's Low-End Android for Boost

We received an invitation to New York to join Samsung as they look to unveil a new device for pre-paid carrier Boost Mobile, but had no idea what to expect. The event isn’t scheduled to go down until Tuesday, but Engadget’s received a 19-paged document in which they found the Samsung Galaxy Prevail, a low-end Android handset.

From the looks of this thing, it’s about as bare an Android phone as you’re going to get. It has a now-smallish 3.2 inch capacitive display, a 2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooh, and expandable memory (among other usual suspects) – that’s all that could be mustered up as far as specs go.

And judging by that list, I’d say don’t expect too much excitement in other areas such as processor, RAM, which version of Android it’ll run. Virgin also looks to be carrying the device, according to the same source. The device will cost $180 so this is as good as it’s going to get if you want a cheap introduction to Android.

Nexus S With AT&T 3G Radios Shows Up at Online Retailer

Online retailer Negri Electronics has seemingly outed an AT&T version of the Samsung Nexus S, but that most likely isn't the case. Instead, it could be an import from overseas or simply a version of the device headed for several major Canadian carriers very soon. We'd bank heavily on the latter considering its modest price in US dollars. (Imports tend to be a lot more expensive than the MSRP.)

Whatever the case, if you have been wanting a Nexus S for AT&T and can't wait for the powers that be to bring it then this may be your best shot. (That's if you were already planning on getting it without a contract.) Head over there to purchase one if you're feeling up to it.

Developers Get Honeycomb Working on CDMA Galaxy Tabs

That 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab was a nice grab for some of you when it first came out, but I bet you felt a bit slighted when Google introduced Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Samsung didn’t utter a peep about when or if they’d bring the tablet-specific operating system to their 7-inch offering. With the 10-inch and 8.9-inch renditions, it looks like we’ll never hear anything in that regard.

That’s where these hard-working developers come in, though. Folks at XDA have gotten Android 3.0 up and running on the tablet. Caveats? It’s not the least bit stable and it’s only confirmed to be working on CDMA versions of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. (Those available on contract for Sprint and Verizon here in the United States.) I’m hopeful they’ll be throwing as much time and effort as they can at this project, though, so be sure to follow them at their XDA thread.
